August 13th, 1961: the GDR government shuts down the
border between West and East Berlin, which to this day had been a more or less permeable line. At first it is only barbed wire, but it soon develops later a veritable wall, later known as the trench of death, which separates families, lovers and friends and presents them
with unknown conflicts and momentous decisions, many make desperate, but unsuccessful attempts at flight.
Like a burning glass the “Bernauer Straße” focuses the fate of the city of Berlin and its
inhabitants. The border runs exactly in the middle of the street and on its eastern side house
walls suddenly become part of the new border wall. Parents throw their children from the
windows of the bordering houses; an old woman, hanging out of one of these windows, is held back by GDR-soldiers on the one side and
drawn down by passengers on the other; in what seems to be a last-minute chance, a GDR soldier in uniform jumps over the barbed wire into the West, his rifle still in his hand. In the weeks to follow several people begin to dig tunnels – for themselves or to help friends and family members to an unseen escape into the West.
The directors Alex Byrne and Kjell Moberg took these events at the “Bernauer Straße” as a
starting point for a theatrical journey into recent German history, played by an international
cast with actors of JES and New International Encounter (NIE).
