About Us

Founded in 2004, the Junges Ensemble Stuttgart (JES) is the theatre for young audiences in Stuttgart promoted by the city and state. Five to six theatre productions per year which focus on the living environment of young people are presented on three stages inside the Kulturareal unterm Turm (cultural area under the tower) by a professional ensemble. The width of the repertoire ranges from classical narrative theater to dance theater, performative formats, theatre for the youngest and participative projects, in which youths and professionals are standing on stage on an equal footing. The pieces are frequently developed by the director and ensemble during the course of rehearsals.

The JES not only gives guest performances at national and international events, but also hosts the international festival for young audiences SCHÖNE AUSSICHT (BRIGHT VIEW) every other year. The strong international network leads to frequent artistic collaborations with theatre makers from all over Europe.

The large-scale pedagogical department offers theatre clubs for all age groups: children, teenagers, adults and seniors stage own performances at the JES’s venues. With four to six presentations each, the clubs are a fixed component of the JES’s programme. In addition, the offer includes preparations and follow-ups as well as workshops and advanced trainings.

As of season 2022/2023, Grete Pagan will replace Brigitte Dethier as artistic director of the JES.
