Milan Gather was born in Aachen in 1993 and grew up in Dortmund. He developed his first theatre works as part of the directing workshop at Schauspielhaus Bochum and in the independent scene in Leipzig. From 2014 to 2018, he studied acting at the State University of Music and Performing Arts Stuttgart and joined the acting studio at the Stuttgart State Theatre in the 2017\/18 season. He then became a member of the ensemble at JES Stuttgart. There he wrote his first play, \u2018Astronauten\u2019, which was invited to several festivals in 2020 and was awarded the Youth Play Prize at the Heidelberger St\u00fcckemarkt together with the two other invited productions. He also made his directorial debut at JES in 2021 with his second play \u2018OMA MONIKA – was war?\u2019. In 2022, the play won the KinderSt\u00fcckePreis at the 47th M\u00fclheimer Theatertage and 1st prize at the 25th Hessian Children’s and Youth Theatre Week KUSS and was translated into several languages. Actually, everything was as it always was. Balthasar spent almost every afternoon with his grandmother Monika, until his parents stopped immersing themselves in work and came to pick him up. But this time they were going to go away on a work trip, so this time Balthasar would spend the night with Grandma Monika ecause Balthasar is with his grandmother so often, he also knows her little secret: her forgetfulness and the trouble she has finding the right words, not only when doing crossword puzzles together.

On this evening, however, Balthasar notices that his grandmother's memories and connections suddenly disappear from her mind more and more often. What happens when she forgets herself at some point? Who, then, was Grandma Monika? Together, grandmother and grandson set off in search of her memories and biographical traces. The kitchen becomes the parcourse of a long and eventful life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Notes on sensory stimuli<\/h2>
\n

The following stimuli appear in places<\/strong> in the production:

- Use of loud music, an electric guitar, microphones and kitchen appliances used as musical instruments.
- Rapid light changes, colorful and dim light and a lamp that flickers. In one scene, circles of light move across the stage.
- A curtain of balls hangs around the stage, making noises and glittering in the light.
- At one moment, rose petals are thrown into the air.
- An actress shows great emotion and throws a cup on the floor in one scene. The cup breaks.
- The audience sits on wooden benches throughout the performance and should keep quiet.

A young man living the dream of many young people: Becoming an astronaut. He tells us stories about the hardships of the selection process. About the experience of weightlessness, survival training under extreme conditions. About the analog mission in a cave to train 2000 meters below earth for the next moon landing. About looking back at our vulnerable blue planet and the feeling of humility before life.

But there\u2019s something else. Something that is increasingly upsetting the young man. Something that has to do with his own youth. With guilt that has never been atoned for and that haunts him, with brutality and loneliness. And with a classmate who even then, years back, dreamed of being able to fly. 

Gradually it becomes clear: the budding astronaut was involved in a serious case of bullying (without the word being mentioned throughout the play) as a juvenile delinquent, in the very room where he now stands again.

Life is not fair. Some people are allowed to stay up late, others can already reach the shelf with the sweets. It's usually the majority who decide which game to play. If just a few group members misbehave, is nobody allowed to have ice cream? And of course: Who is allowed to play with which toy?

The list could go on and on, as could the list of attempts to make everyone equal. How do you get someone to be fair and give up something when so many others give up nothing?

To develop the play, author and director Milan Gather and the JES ensemble first go on a research trip to schools and daycare centres to find out: When do we perceive something as unfair? How do we deal with unequal conditions? And how willing are we ourselves to compromise and show solidarity?<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
