Wir so: Welt retten (Premiere)

A children’s game. By Thilo Reffert (Commissioned by Junges Ensemble Stuttgart)

Nazareth 2000 years ago: Emmanuel grows up with his friends: the Jew Ruth, the Babylonian Amon and the Roman Titus. In order to understand the world, they reenact the stories that have been handed down to them, especially those of Moses. However, they do not find answers to their questions: Why is Rome the centre of the world? Why is Rome allowed to wallow in luxury and exploit its provinces and the environment for it? And why does everyone still want to live like the Romans? Because the adults only shrug their shoulders in concern, the children begin to look deeper into the old stories for new insights. They discover that not everything in life is as God-given as parents and teachers like to claim; that Emmanuel’s birth was prophesied in the old stories — and that there is talk of the Redeemer and World Saviour. What would it be like if he actually had superpowers?

From the stories of the Old Testament (the Torah and the Tanakh), Thilo Reffert has developed a new play about human history on behalf of JES. It is also a story about the onset of puberty and the realisation that we all, as part of society, help determine its fate and development.
